I love eink. Maybe not surprising considering I have also worked in the kindle org for 10+ years now. Not on eink mind you but being involved with the product and the space probably leads to some of my affection towards it
I have taken photos since high school so over 20 years now, and I have always wanted a digital picture frame which I could hang and have it update periodically with photos throughout my life.
Eink was the natural solution since it uses little energy and might last months on a single charge. The problem though is they are expensive and still not great at colour. A friend shared with me the reTerminal e1004 which is a color eink panel. Price wise it was a tiny bit cheaper than competitors but this one was a lot more open. I could swap the firmware which was tempting
I splurged on the device and have been enjoying it. It is a bit finicky but I do love looking at it. I installed a community firmware plugin which looks to be working okay. Switching images takes like 30 seconds so testing images on the panel is a bit slow.
